During our weekly Wednesday meetings, we have been learning about Climate change and pollution. We learned that climate change will affect the worlds poor the most. Pope Francis has called us all to ‘Care for our common home’ in his encyclical called ‘Laudato si’.

The CAFOD group at St. Cecilia’s understands that we have a duty to ‘Care for Gods Creation’, as this is our role as stewards. It is also a strand of Catholic Social Teaching. Therefore, the pupils wanted to organise a litter pick to do something positive and show others that it is not something to be embarrassed about, picking up litter is what we all should be doing. Even if it its not our own, but we certainly should all be ensuring our own litter is ether recycled or disposed of properly.

· 1.3m pieces of rubbish are dropped on UK roads every weekend.

· Plastic bags take 10-20 years and plastic bottles can last forever

· 500,000 items of litter make their way into the sea from UK rivers every year, impacting on marine life

· The canals and rivers of England and Wales could be plastic-free in a year if every visitor picked up one piece of litter, according to the

(The Canal and River Trust)

The group did amazingly well and really enjoyed really the chance to be outside in the sunshine doing something positive and helpful. We wore gloves, used the correct equipment and collected 6 full bags in total especially round the perimeters. This prevented litter being carried of into the neighbouring streets and area. We hope to continue and do one each half term.
